BPA Awareness on the Rise

Bisphenol A, or BPA, is a dangerous molecule that is used for its ability to increase the durability, clarity and impact and heat resistance of plastic. When the plastic is exposed to abnormal temperatures or pH levels, the BPA leaches out of the plastic and into the food or drink. Most BPA exposure is oral, but BPA can also enter the body through the skin, and has been linked to many health problems.

Many everyday items, including baby bottles, food and drink packaging and water bottles contain BPA, but especially pernicious is its strong presence on electronic cash register receipts. The community action group, Arizona Water Activists Karing for the Environment (AWAKE) recommends that consumers wash their hands after handling the paper and using powdered baby formula to lessen the risk of exposure.

AWAKE has carried out successful initiatives by teaming up with Pat’s Run and the Brain Tumor Walk on recycling booths, working with Frontier Airlines to use BPA-free bottles and other civic and private organizations to raise local awareness of this pressing issue.
