Great March for Climate Action to Pass Through Arizona

The purpose of the Great March for Climate Action is to inspire and motivate the general public and elected officials to act now to address the climate crisis. Leaving Los Angeles on March 1, marchers will walk 14 to 15 miles per day and camp nearly every night. After 3,000 miles on foot, the March will conclude in Washington, D.C., on November 1. Rallies will be held in cities along the March route and new technologies will be demonstrated to show ways to combat the climate crisis.

Route destinations in Arizona include Parker, Bouse, Salome, Aguila, Wickenburg, Circle City, Wittmann, Surprise, Sun City Grand, Sun City, Sun City West, Peoria, Glendale, Phoenix, Payson, Star Valley, Forest Lakes, Heber, Heber-Overgaard, Snowflake, Concho and St Johns. Arrival at the first city, Parker, is estimated to be on March 24, and the last on April 19.

Activists, politicians and organizations have pledged their support to the Climate March, including environmental activist Bill McKibben, actor Ed Begley, Jr., Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), author and activist Jim Hightower and noted human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Mairead Maguire. Organizations include the Natural Resources Defense Council, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Citizens Climate Lobby and 350.org.

Erica Cheshire, Arizona State Coordinator of the March, states, “Climate change can be felt and seen throughout Arizona. We have droughts threatening our water supply, wildfires that have taken lives and are destroying our forests, and haboobs rocking our cities during the summer months. It’s time to take action and to make a stand so that our children know we did the best we could for their future.”
