Community Spotlight: Allow My Dentist to Become Your Friend: An interview with Dr. Michael Margolis

My Dentist is a team of dedicated dental professionals headed by internationally acclaimed speaker on Holistic Dentistry, Dr. Michael Margolis, and Dr. Stephen Kovar. They stress the use of non-toxic restorative materials for dental work and focus on the impact dental toxins and hidden dental infections can have on overall health, treating the teeth, jaws and related structures, with specific regard to the effect of treatment on the entire body.

What is unique about your practice?

While looking at the body as a whole, we also address common issues such as pain symptoms, oral systemic balance of the autonomic nervous system, TMJ management of a patient’s airway, snoring and sleeping disorders and sleep apnea. Even with our cosmetic dentistry and restoration, the correct bite and optimal jaw alignment for the whole body is taken into account.

What is holistic and biological dentistry?

Treating you holistically means looking at the body as a whole. Often, symptoms somewhere else in the body can be linked to a problem in the mouth, and we look at the relationship between specific teeth and illness. Modern biological dentistry considers every procedure and material that is placed in your mouth. We use non-toxic restorative materials and biocompatible materials, utilizing a blood antigen test, which means that the dental materials used are compatible with the body as a whole. We also focus on the unrecognized impact that dental toxins and hidden dental infections can have on the patient’s overall health and well-being. We do not use fluoride or mercury fillings, and we remove toxic mercury and other materials under very strict protocols

What services do you and Dr. Kovar provide?

Dr. Kovar has worked with me for more than five years. He provides many dental services with emphasis on cosmetic dentistry, and he’s one of the best I’ve ever seen. Being both a dentist and a doctor of integrative medicine, I work with other physicians handling many complex dental health cases that involve not just the mouth, but the whole body, as well. My focus is on restoring a patient’s overall health and well-being through many holistic techniques, including avoiding root canals, utilizing techniques to reverse a dying nerve by treating it with homeopathics if caught soon enough, eliminating heavy metals, using biocompatible dental materials and much more. If required, I am trained in performing a holistic approach to oral surgeries, but I am not an oral surgeon.

How can a dental issue affect another part of the body?

As a biological dentist, I believe the conditions present in a patient’s mouth are a reflection of their overall health. A condition in one part of a patient’s body may be the cause of a health issue located in another part of the patient’s body. This condition is called Focal Infection Theory. We see it when patients are suffering from chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, thyroid dysfunction, infertility, kidney dysfunction, breathing problems, cancer, digestive complications, joint pain and limited joint motion, just to mention a few. This is not to say that the patient became ill as a result of their mouth problems, but that it may be a contributing factor. The Meridian Tooth Chart (see my website) is a proven resource for showing the connection between a specific tooth and its impact on another part of the body.

What are some of the treatments that you offer?

We treat patients of all ages. Many procedures relate to the removal of toxic materials from a patient’s mouth. This can be mercury fillings, metal-based crowns and metal-based dentures.  We address oral electrogalvanism resulting from multiple different metals being used in the mouth and creating an electric current in the mouth and head. This highly charged electrical current interferes with the body’s natural flow of energy and can cause irritability of the nervous system, headaches, depressed immune system and other symptoms. We also see patients who are referred by homeopathic and naturopathic physicians.

What’s the most important thing people should know about dental health?

That modern dentistry done incorrectly or without regard to a patient’s material sensitivities can cause severe long-term damage. Some of the most advanced dental procedures can have an adverse impact on your health if you are placing metals or other toxic materials in someone’s mouth and that person is allergic to such materials. It’s very important to test a patient for potential allergies first before performing any procedure. Some patients who come to me have been having ill health for many years. After seeing multiple doctors and undergoing many tests and procedures with no clear diagnosis and poor results, patients may experience positive results from the removal of metals used in their mouth.
