Staring with this issue, Natural Awakenings is debuting an ongoing feature that focuses on Valley-area neighborhoods that enjoy a large number of healthy and green living businesses, retailers and other like organizations. Our first neighborhood spotlight recognizes 7th Street, between McDowell and Thomas Roads, in downtown Phoenix. Bordered to the east by the Coronado Historical District, the area hosts a number of residents already focused on reuse and reinvestment in historical homes.

Phoenix Community Acupuncture, founded by Mayo Mercedes Wardle, LAc, Dipl OM, is a group-style acupuncture style clinic that is bringing affordable and accessible acupuncture to as many people as possible. Wardle says, “Our sliding scale allows you to come in often enough to see positive results.”

The Green New American Vegetarian and Nami Tsoft Tserve and Coffee is a 100 percent vegan eatery, offering classic comfort foods like burgers, wings, chicken sandwiches, as well as healthy options like fresh garden burritos, salads and organic rice bowls. Nami offers an amazing plant-strong vegan breakfast and vegan treats like house-made pastries, house-made organic soft serve ice cream and fair trade coffee.

Owner and Chef Damon Brasch says, “This area, like much of the Valley, is certainly moving toward a healthier lifestyle. People are realizing the benefits of plant-based foods, not just for the ethical reasons, but also for environmental impacts and personal health.

Urban Wellness is called a healthy oasis in Phoenix by owners Douglas and Patty Edgelow, founders of Urban Yoga. One of the two buildings is a holistic healing center well-staffed by a dozen practitioners of different modalities. The two newest additions are Luis Mangandi, a Chinese herbalist, and Annie Meigs, an acupuncturist. In the second building, Gregory’s Fresh Market is opening a full-time farmers’ market serving fresh produce and local specialties.

Coronado residents Rebecca and Matthew Fritz opened SuTRA Midtown in 2007 as a gathering place for health-conscious urbanites. Along with introductory and advanced yoga classes, the studio offers massage, Skullpt pilates, modern meditation and a Mum Deva series of prenatal activities for expectant mothers.

The Coronado Phoenix is a vegetarian/vegan eatery, coffee shop and bar opened by Liam Murtagh, one of the owners of the former vegan restaurant Bragg's Factory Diner.

The Coronado Neighborhood Association comprises a diverse group of residents and businesses organized to preserve and promote the unique character of Greater Coronado. The volunteer membership works to build a united and informed neighborhood, increase resident safety, promote artistic and cultural appreciation, and hold events that bring neighbors together.

Marketing Chair Mai Crone says, “This creates a deeper sense of community, making Coronado an attractive and desirable place to live. The Coronado neighborhood is attractive to many green and healthy living businesses because the community collectively cares about sustainability and making the world a better place, one neighborhood at a time. The influx of new businesses and restaurants to the area is most likely a result of the high density of community-minded individuals in the Coronado neighborhood.”
